Pictoplasma Rabbit mini Project Evaluation & SWOT analysis

Image
This was just  very small project we did for the Pictoplasma Easter Bunny competition. We were just asked to look at some different rabbit characters and then design our own. We would then upload our character onto the Pictoplasma website before the competition entry deadline.  I sketched out a bunch of different designs and ended up running with a sort of angular ghost bunny. I'm kind of happy with the design I cam up with in the little time I put in. I did really like the more renaissance portrait style designs i cam up with I just didn't feel confident enough in my skills to get them digitised in a way that looked good before the deadline. Strengths Helped get me used to creating work for a brief and also sharing said work It was good to see what everyone else was coming up with for the competition and comparing it to my own ideas. Weaknesses the short deadline made me want to avoid experimentation of techniques. I think the chara...

Contextual Studies Evaluation & SWOT Analysis

Image
Character Design Illustration Animation For my contextual studies I was tasked with researching a wide range of artists. I was asked to look at 3 character designers, 3 illustrators and 3 animations. I was told to look at artists with a wide range of styles and techniques to help inform my own practice. I started off by looking through one of the Pictoplasma books and just making a list of artists I liked and then from there I chose artists from the list which stood out from each other. For charcter design I looked at a painter, Andy Kehoe, a sculptor, AJ Fosik and a print maker, Roman Klonek. I liked each of the artists unique styles and how different they were from each other in technique. Then for illustrators I did the same and chose different artists from the list. I went with a digital artist, Neil Quisaba, a graffiti artist and painter, Jon Fox and  Nick Sheehy, an artist that uses a lot of traditional techniques. Finally I chose 3 animations at random ...

Character Design Project Evaluation & SWOT Analysis

Image
For this project I was tasked with creating a character sheet for a character that I designed. The character sheet needed to thematically fit the character and include a turn around, colour scheme and back story for the character.  I ended up creating a character inspired by different mythologies, like the Wendigo and giving them a sort of Celtic theme. The Idea for my character being that they are a sort of vengeful spirit out of Celtic lore. The style I ended up going with was very much influenced by medieval etchings so my piece included a lot of scratchy lines to build up texture. I even had my line art laser cut onto wood to try and replicate the look, which can be seen on my character sheet as the turn around.    Overall I am quite pleased with how my design came out. I think Illustrator was the right choice for creating the line work since the angular style I was going for worked best with how precise Illustrator can be. It also made getting the lines ...

Artist Spotlight: Arthur Rackham

Image
A rthur Rackham was my main inspiration for the style of my last animation project. I just really like his ink work, just how intricate his work looks. I particularly like the way he drew trees, I like the way he made the lines of detail wrap around to create this 3D look. I also really like the way he drew water in his pieces with ripples in the water or the layers of arching waves. I really Like his work depicting the story of Sigfried and Brynhildr since I am a huge fan of Norse mythology and really like the way Valkyrie's look in older artwork. I will keep his work in mind for the future if I get a project that I think his work would be a good bit of inspiration for.

Environment Animation Project Evaluation and SWOT Assessment

Image
For this project I was tasked with creating a piece of environment animation using 2D assets in a 3D plane. This is a technique called 2.5D or pseudo 3D. For my animation I went with a graveyard as my environment and used pen and ink to create my assets with a small bit of cutout black card for objects which needed less detail. The style I went with was inspired by Arthur Rackham's ink work but with a slightly creepier twist. I think overall I am rather happy with how my assets came out though I think I could have done with more of them. I also ran out of time and the final scene of my animation never got completed so it just loops back to the start. This is definitely something I would like to address in the future. Strengths I think my assets looks suitably spooky for the theme and since this project was my first time using ink I'm very happy with what I have been able to accomplish with washes and other techniques. I'm very happy with my sound design ...

Animation Spotlight: United Airlines, Dragon

Image
https://vimeo.com/7158709 While I was looking at inspiration for my environment project I came across this advert for united airline which uses cutout animation. I found the advert to be surprisingly good and pretty damn well animated. It depicts the imagination of child and what they imagine their father gets up to when he goes away on business trips turning him from a simple business man into a dragon slaying knight of the round table. I really like how they were able to work 2D cutout into a 3D environment from tehir use of cutout for the blanket at the start or the way the round table breaks into 9 shields. It has a very tactile feel. I also really like seeing how they created things like fire or the water of the ocean by layering the different cutouts on top of each other and using perspective to create depth.

Artist Spotlight: Joe Benitez

Image
Joe Benitez is a comic book artist I looked at during the life drawing project for my final piece since I was going for a Day of the Dead style which is the same as some of the character designs he did for the Lady Mechanika comics. I've always been a fan of the aesthetic, the mix of skulls and death imagery with bright colours and floral patterns I think works really well and looks very unique. I am likely to try more Day of the Dead styled characters in the future and will remember to look at his pieces again for inspiration.
