Weekly update + targets - two tone prints

Image
Relief Prints Last week I finished up my relief printing using the roller press. I wanted to finish up by doing some two colour prints. the first one I did was done by turning my acrylic square over onto the side without the illustration on it and then putting it through with red ink to create a perfect red square. I then waited for that to dry and ran through over it with the illustration in black. This gave the effect of the red poking through the gaps of white. The other two I did were both done by putting red and black on the roller together. this created a nice gradient effect. I did one horizontal and one vertical. the vertical one came out looking more distressed due to the ink running low but the horizontal one came out really clean. I am happy with how these 3 prints came out and think it was a good way to finish my relief printing off. Weekly update - Relief Printing + targets

Image
I managed to complete a decent amount of relief prints since last update. I started off by doing some dry prints where you run the paper with the plate through the roller press without ink. this gives an embossed effect to the paper which can look quite nice. I then started to use the different ink's, starting with a classic black. I then experimented with the different colours available. I managed to get red and blue prints done as well as a good amount of black. Overall I am really happy with how my updated artwork went with this technique. the relief printing method picks up a lot of fine detail and when compared to screen printing feels a lot more clean and tactial to do. I think I would defiantly choose this method over screen printing if I want to do prints in future. T arget M y target for this week will be to get some more experiments done with the printing. I want to get a black print done on red since I think the contrast will look really nice. I ...

Alternative Techniques - Update + targets

Image
I have started work on the relief printing part of the project and taken my image from the previous  part and gone back in to add more detail since this printing technique shows detail better. I wanted to almost replicate tattoo art style by adding the heavy black shading to the piece. I have already had the piece sent to the laser cutter and got my etched acrylic back. Target: -I plan on getting some relief prints done by the end of this week and should have an update with images of the prints next week.

Alternative Techniques - Screen Printing

Image
For my alternative techniques project we are looking into a bunch of different print making techniques like Screen printing, Relief printing and Riso Printing. I've completed the screen printing using this Day of the Dead wolf skull design and I thought I'd post some of the prints I ended up with. T he first 3 are all just acrylic on different coloured card and the final is a print which is done much the same way. My first few runs with the screen worked out better, as it went on the paint started bleeding or missing large spaces out. Don't know whether this is just from the paint mix being off or if the screen itself was becoming too loose. I quite like some of the results where it didn't work perfect like the black print on the red which has a nice worn look to it.

Illustration & animation Year 2 update - Character Design Project

Image
This is my first post of my second year doing Animation & Illustration. I thought I would update the blog on what I've done thus far in my second year. I've completed one project (Character Design) and am part way through my Alternative Tecniques project which is a print making project.  I have also just started a narrative project where I am putting together a story following on from my character design from the previos project. I thought I would start off by posting some images from my Character Design project and then is further posts going into what I've done so far in relation to my other projects. I started off the project by focusing on expression and how simple changes to things like the placement of eyebrows or pupils, as well as the distance between them can effect a characters expression. I did some experimentation with taking a random head shape and then adding features to change the overall feel of the character. For the actual character design I en...

Tangled Project Evaluation & SWOT analysis

Image
So this projects brief was to create an illustration around the theme of the word 'Tangled'. This piece would will be entered into the contest and published in a book so its a great opportunity to get my work out there and shown alongside others. We were all told to come up with 3 concepts that we would then narrow down and choose which idea to go with. My chosen idea ended up being based around the idea of being tangled in a web, with the web being a metaphor for the internet or the world wide web. The idea was to convey how things like conflict and politics have changed with the internet. An example of this would be the Russian influence online in the american election. I went with an 80's synth style because it fit the cyber/online aesthetic but I also liked how it connected it to the time period of the Cold War with relations to Russia feeling like they are breaking down again.  Overall I am very pleased with how the piece came together as I had little ...

Research & Analysis: Mcbess

Image
While in Berlin I also had the chance to visit The Dudes Factory which is a shop run by the brother of the illustrator Mcbess. The shop had lots of different products with Mcbess' artwork and its decorated with his artwork, like prints and even sculptures. I hadn't really looked into him before the trip but immediately fell in love with his work. I managed to buy a bunch of clothes while there and got to know his brother quite well. This was defiantly one of the highlights of the trip for me. Style I love his 20's cartoon style mixed with a tattoo art aesthetic. His work just really stands out to me even though it's mostly just black and white, everything just given so much character and life.  I think the half mermaids he draws are my personal favourite. I just love how beautiful they are and how bubbly they look. They just look real happy, I also appreciate How body positive they are. Technique  From looking at his Instagram you can s...
