Looping animation project evaluation and strengths + weakness' assessment





For this project I was tasked with creating a bunch of different looping animations meaning the animation had to end leading back to the start. This project was good way to get me to try out a whole bunch of different mediums since I got to create things using methods from cutout to digital drawing using software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I feel I could have done better on this project if I had gotten more animations complete since I came out of it with a bunch of unfinished experiments. I also need to work on my documentation of my workflow so it's easier when looking at my sketchbook how I got to the final result.

Strengths 

  •  I think I tried a decent amount of different techniques over the course of this project and everything I created was quite different from each other.
  • I managed to learn a lot during this project of what is expected of me on this course which will help going forward
  • I think my workflow going forward should be more organised just through what i learned from this project
  • The variety of artists and animators I looked at for this project I feel pretty good about.
Weakness'

  • I don't think I came out with anything from this project that I was really happy with as the final result
  • My time management could of course always be improved since this was my first project hopefully it will improve somewhat naturally.

Riso Prints - Werewolf

As part of my print making project I also tried my hand at Riso Printing. Riso printing is somewhat similar to photo copying and requires each colour of the illustation be sperated to different layers and be run through the machine seperatly. The colours you get from Riso printing are limited but also very colourful and bright. I wanted to create a very eye catching image for my riso print so I chose very bright colours which I thought would be fun. I tried to keep in the wolf theme I had for the previous printing methods. I am excited to try out more Riso prints in the future since the technique is very simple to use with any digital illustrations.

Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2018 entries

I decided to look into past entries from the tangled theme of cheltenham Illustration awards since with my work based learning project I am working with this years word prompt of unity. By looking at past entries I hope to get an idea of the sort of work the awards are looking for and then I can compare that to my own work. It's quite difficult to find images from the prior years awards and even harder to find images that show the full pieces and not just a corner of them. I don't know why the awards photography is like this but here is some images I was able to find. Last years entries Things that stand out to me about last years entries are the prevalence of traditional work compared to digital. it's kind of hard to tell either way with some pieces but I imagine most of those are done traditionally as well. Artist Spotlight: Joe Benitez

Joe Benitez is a comic book artist I looked at during the life drawing project for my final piece since I was going for a Day of the Dead style which is the same as some of the character designs he did for the Lady Mechanika comics. I've always been a fan of the aesthetic, the mix of skulls and death imagery with bright colours and floral patterns I think works really well and looks very unique. I am likely to try more Day of the Dead styled characters in the future and will remember to look at his pieces again for inspiration.
