Sequential Images project evaluation and strengths + weakness assessment
So I have finished my Sequential Images project and handed in so I thought I would do and overview of the project and do a strengths and weaknesses assessment. As you can see I ended up going with the Griffin head from The Great North Museum for my triptych, which I mentioned in a previous post. After coming up with three Ideas, based off the objects found at the museum, I then narrowed down those ideas until I was left with the one I wanted to do. The Idea I ended up going with was this idea of using symbolism to represent the downfall of the Macedonian Empire. I had this idea that the griffin head was originally a figurehead of a ship and after researching Griffins in Greek mythology I found out that they are usually associated with with kingship since they are part lion (king of beasts) and part eagle (king of birds). So I ended up thinking about the griffin figurehead as a symbol of Alexander the Great (Iskander), who was the literal figurehead of the Macedonian Empire.
As you can see I ended up going with a Greek pottery style for my pieces since the aesthetic fitted well and made narrative sense. The first image depicts the rise of the empire ,with the ship setting sail and the rising sun in the background. This is for symbolism and the sun also being an important image for Macedonia with it being used as a icon on their flags and shields and I even used the icon on the sails of the ship. The second image shows the empire starting to crumble, with the ship in battle with some Persian's ships, which it is clearly losing. Then the final image showing after the fall of the empire, the figurehead has been lost to the bottom of the sea.
Strength's
Strength's
- I think one of the biggest strengths I had on this project were the three concepts I came up with, I think I could have happily gone with any of the three and found merit in either of them. this helps because now if need an idea for a future project I can come back to the two Ideas I ended up not choosing and take them on board.
- Another big strength I think I found on this project was a style that I think worked perfectly for the concept I chose and a style I was able to replicate on all three of the pieces to make them cohesively go together. The style also has a workflow which I find easy to do but also can see a lot of different ways to make it more complex and intricate.
- I think the limited colours are also a strength, while working on the project I was looking at a lot of different illustrators and how their work used colour and I found the pieces with limited colours were actually the most striking.
- I think a big weakness I had was the time limit since it made me really want to get the work out of the way but left me with little time to explore different methods and techniques. I ended up doing my line work in Adobe Illustrator since I'm pretty confidant in the software, having done my final piece on my last course using the program. This meant I didn't explore hand drawn line art as much I wish I had. I think it worked out in the end but it's something to think about in future.
- Another weakness was with the style I chose it became very hard to find artists with that style or similar since the style comes from the B.C. period. Once I finished the project I found a Video Game called Apotheon which is a 2D game with a Greek Pottery style and I wish I had known before hand so I could have looked at it as part of my research.
