Character Design Project Evaluation & SWOT Analysis

For this project I was tasked with creating a character sheet for a character that I designed. The character sheet needed to thematically fit the character and include a turn around, colour scheme and back story for the character.

I ended up creating a character inspired by different mythologies, like the Wendigo and giving them a sort of Celtic theme. The Idea for my character being that they are a sort of vengeful spirit out of Celtic lore. The style I ended up going with was very much influenced by medieval etchings so my piece included a lot of scratchy lines to build up texture. I even had my line art laser cut onto wood to try and replicate the look, which can be seen on my character sheet as the turn around.
Overall I am quite pleased with how my design came out. I think Illustrator was the right choice for creating the line work since the angular style I was going for worked best with how precise Illustrator can be. It also made getting the lines laser cut very easy. If I had more time on the project I would have liked trying some 3D sculpting for the character just to see how it would look. This would also help improve my 3D skills.

Strengths
  • I like the theme and design of the character I came up with. I enjoy basing work off of things related to history and mythology.
  • The laser cut I managed to have done really helped to set my work apart and gave me a really nice piece to hand in along with my character sheet.
  • I'm happy with the the style I was able to create for the background of my character sheet, it's not overly busy and the way I separated the different areas made it easy to follow.
Weaknesses
  • I didn't get as much experimentation done as I would have liked. I would have liked to have been able to try out some 3D stuff with this project.
  • If id had more time I would also have liked to try out alternative materials for the line art to be laser cut onto. The one used was a recycled wood so it would have been nice to have seen it on a nicer material.
  • I also didn't do any work with creating my own font. This would have been interesting to try out.
Opportunities
  • This project gave me a chance to design a character at an industry standard. It allowed me to experiment with styles and methods I had not used before.
Threats

  • The only threat I can see is if my character sheet background is too simple. I think it works for its purpose but can also see the argument for it being overly simple.
