Tangled Project Evaluation & SWOT analysis




So this projects brief was to create an illustration around the theme of the word 'Tangled'. This piece would will be entered into the contest and published in a book so its a great opportunity to get my work out there and shown alongside others. We were all told to come up with 3 concepts that we would then narrow down and choose which idea to go with.

My chosen idea ended up being based around the idea of being tangled in a web, with the web being a metaphor for the internet or the world wide web. The idea was to convey how things like conflict and politics have changed with the internet. An example of this would be the Russian influence online in the american election. I went with an 80's synth style because it fit the cyber/online aesthetic but I also liked how it connected it to the time period of the Cold War with relations to Russia feeling like they are breaking down again. 

Overall I am very pleased with how the piece came together as I had little confidence in Cinema 4D before this project. Especially when it came to making models and this project required a lot of that. I think the style of the piece works really well with the concept and the skills I've learned along the way are sure to help me in future. I still have final camera angles in the scene to go through and will likely update with the final shot when done.

Strengths

  • I feel the concept and style are very strong, as well as being timely to current events
  • I managed to pick up a lot of new skills in a piece of software I didn't have before, whether it be from watching tutorials or getting help from tutors.
Weaknesses
  • probably the biggest weakness is the fact I've mainly been working digitally so my sketchbook has suffered.
Opportunities 
  • This project gave me a chance to both improve skills and show off what i'd learned. It also let me work to a theme set for me which should help with future work.
Threats
  • I hope the piece is not too literal or too abstract to get the concept across.

Riso Prints - Werewolf

As part of my print making project I also tried my hand at Riso Printing. Riso printing is somewhat similar to photo copying and requires each colour of the illustation be sperated to different layers and be run through the machine seperatly. The colours you get from Riso printing are limited but also very colourful and bright. I wanted to create a very eye catching image for my riso print so I chose very bright colours which I thought would be fun. I tried to keep in the wolf theme I had for the previous printing methods. I am excited to try out more Riso prints in the future since the technique is very simple to use with any digital illustrations.

Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2018 entries

I decided to look into past entries from the tangled theme of cheltenham Illustration awards since with my work based learning project I am working with this years word prompt of unity. By looking at past entries I hope to get an idea of the sort of work the awards are looking for and then I can compare that to my own work. It's quite difficult to find images from the prior years awards and even harder to find images that show the full pieces and not just a corner of them. I don't know why the awards photography is like this but here is some images I was able to find. Last years entries Things that stand out to me about last years entries are the prevalence of traditional work compared to digital. it's kind of hard to tell either way with some pieces but I imagine most of those are done traditionally as well. I tend to stick to more digital work with my pieces and I don't know if thats a good idea with the lack of digital work you see in the past entries. Though...

Artist Spotlight: Joe Benitez

Joe Benitez is a comic book artist I looked at during the life drawing project for my final piece since I was going for a Day of the Dead style which is the same as some of the character designs he did for the Lady Mechanika comics. I've always been a fan of the aesthetic, the mix of skulls and death imagery with bright colours and floral patterns I think works really well and looks very unique. I am likely to try more Day of the Dead styled characters in the future and will remember to look at his pieces again for inspiration.
