Contextual Studies Evaluation & SWOT Analysis
Character Design

Illustration

Animation

For my contextual studies I was tasked with researching a wide range of artists. I was asked to look at 3 character designers, 3 illustrators and 3 animations. I was told to look at artists with a wide range of styles and techniques to help inform my own practice.
I started off by looking through one of the Pictoplasma books and just making a list of artists I liked and then from there I chose artists from the list which stood out from each other. For charcter design I looked at a painter, Andy Kehoe, a sculptor, AJ Fosik and a print maker, Roman Klonek. I liked each of the artists unique styles and how different they were from each other in technique. Then for illustrators I did the same and chose different artists from the list. I went with a digital artist, Neil Quisaba, a graffiti artist and painter, Jon Fox and Nick Sheehy, an artist that uses a lot of traditional techniques. Finally I chose 3 animations at random from a list I was given. All 3 were from the motion section on the hand out, that way I could compare them easily. I looked at a music video called Let Go by David Wilson, a advert for Kopparberg called Hummingbird and then a comical animation shot like a documentary called Doomed by Guillermo Garcia.
By the end of the project I was very happy with the artists I looked at but less so the animations. I think this is just a product of my own personal interests. I also went over the word count for the task. Though this was my first project doing Harvard Referencing so i'm very happy with what I was able to do.

Strengths
- I'm happy with the range of artists I looked at and how varied in style and technique they were.
- I was able to find a bunch of new artists to look into in the future
- I think writing is my weakest point so the fact I feel I did pretty well on this project is good
- I was able to get some practice at Harvard Referencing which will be handy in future
Weaknesses
- Not as much attention given to the animation part of the research
- I went over the word count buy quite a bit
- I feel I was able to write way more about some artists than others, just down to the information available
Oppertunities
- Gave me some decent practice at writing tasks
- Gave me some artists I can look at in future projects as inspiration
Threats
- The biggest threat is likely my own personal interests and how that made me spend more time on character design and illustration than animation.
