Research & Analysis: Ged Sia & Jogo




Ged Sia's work was also shown at the same exhibition as victor Castillo's and Moki's work. I was not able to grab any pictures at the time since it was busy and there were only a few of their pieces at the place. I still managed to see some of their paintings in person.

Style

  • their characters remind me of balloon animals, they also have this sort of liquid motion to them, almost like they're dripping with life.
  •  I like how muted some of the pieces are and then how vibrant others can be. This creates a nice contrast between works. 
Technique
  • Some of their work are these grand paintings  done traditionally where as others are digital 3D based work. I think the range of methods really helps set the pieces apart from each other while the style makes them all still fit in together.
Concept
  • I can tell that form is an important aspect for the artist, with the characters predominately being made up of simple shapes yet you get a sense just by looking at the character how it would move and such. I like that about it and would like to try and achieve this more with my own designs.

Riso Prints - Werewolf

As part of my print making project I also tried my hand at Riso Printing. Riso printing is somewhat similar to photo copying and requires each colour of the illustation be sperated to different layers and be run through the machine seperatly. The colours you get from Riso printing are limited but also very colourful and bright. I wanted to create a very eye catching image for my riso print so I chose very bright colours which I thought would be fun. I tried to keep in the wolf theme I had for the previous printing methods. I am excited to try out more Riso prints in the future since the technique is very simple to use with any digital illustrations.

Research & Analysis: Mcbess

While in Berlin I also had the chance to visit The Dudes Factory which is a shop run by the brother of the illustrator Mcbess. The shop had lots of different products with Mcbess' artwork and its decorated with his artwork, like prints and even sculptures. I hadn't really looked into him before the trip but immediately fell in love with his work. I managed to buy a bunch of clothes while there and got to know his brother quite well. This was defiantly one of the highlights of the trip for me. Style I love his 20's cartoon style mixed with a tattoo art aesthetic. His work just really stands out to me even though it's mostly just black and white, everything just given so much character and life.  I think the half mermaids he draws are my personal favourite. Artist Spotlight: Greg Capullo

I was told it would be a good idea to talk about some artists that I like and have influenced me on my blog so I thought I would start off with one of my all time favourite  comic book artists, Greg Capullo. I really like his work on the Spawn and Batman comics. I love the way he makes everything seem threatening and aggressive using sharp shapes on things like the fabric of the cape or the claw like fingers. I also like the way the deep shadow is used obscuring features mixed with the glow of the eyes and so on. It really help draw attention and gives everything an unnatural feeling. I hope I get an opportunity in a future project to look at more of his work for inspiration.
