Tangled Project Evaluation & SWOT analysis

Image
So this projects brief was to create an illustration around the theme of the word 'Tangled'. This piece would will be entered into the contest and published in a book so its a great opportunity to get my work out there and shown alongside others. We were all told to come up with 3 concepts that we would then narrow down and choose which idea to go with. My chosen idea ended up being based around the idea of being tangled in a web, with the web being a metaphor for the internet or the world wide web. The idea was to convey how things like conflict and politics have changed with the internet. An example of this would be the Russian influence online in the american election. I went with an 80's synth style because it fit the cyber/online aesthetic but I also liked how it connected it to the time period of the Cold War with relations to Russia feeling like they are breaking down again.  Overall I am very pleased with how the piece came together as I had little ...

Research & Analysis: Mcbess

Image
While in Berlin I also had the chance to visit The Dudes Factory which is a shop run by the brother of the illustrator Mcbess. The shop had lots of different products with Mcbess' artwork and its decorated with his artwork, like prints and even sculptures. I hadn't really looked into him before the trip but immediately fell in love with his work. I managed to buy a bunch of clothes while there and got to know his brother quite well. This was defiantly one of the highlights of the trip for me. Style I love his 20's cartoon style mixed with a tattoo art aesthetic. His work just really stands out to me even though it's mostly just black and white, everything just given so much character and life.  I think the half mermaids he draws are my personal favourite. I just love how beautiful they are and how bubbly they look. They just look real happy, I also appreciate How body positive they are. Technique  From looking at his Instagram you can s...

Research & Analysis: Ged Sia & Jogo

Image
Ged Sia's work was also shown at the same exhibition as victor Castillo's and Moki's work. I was not able to grab any pictures at the time since it was busy and there were only a few of their pieces at the place. I still managed to see some of their paintings in person. Style their characters remind me of balloon animals, they also have this sort of liquid motion to them, almost like they're dripping with life.  I like how muted some of the pieces are and then how vibrant others can be. This creates a nice contrast between works.  Technique Some of their work are these grand paintings  done traditionally where as others are digital 3D based work. I think the range of methods really helps set the pieces apart from each other while the style makes them all still fit in together. Concept I can tell that form is an important aspect for the artist, with the characters predominately being made up of simple shapes yet you get a sense just by looking at ...

Research and Analysis: Victor Castillo

Image
At the same exhibition that had Miko's work there were also some paintings by Victor Castillo so I had the opportunity to see them in person. Style I really like the contrasting colours used in his pieces, the blue and reds on the characters faces really stand out against the blank backgrounds. His character all have very vacant yet happy expressions as if all emotion is remove giving the a sinister vibe. Technique I Like how he centres a lot of his work in the frame, it really give the character focus. His work is all hand painted with what looks to be acrylic paints. It has a very glossy look which helps capture the light. Concept It looks to me like his work is about removing identity from his character by giving them all the same face and expression. This leads to pieces have a very unsettling look.

Research and Analysis: Moki

Image
While in Berlin for Pictoplasma 2018 with college, I had the opportunity to go to an exhibition showing off some of the work by the artist Moki. Style The artist uses a lot of greens and brown in their, that mixed with the painting being on pieces of wood really gets across the nature vibe. I like how some of their work is very cartoon with thick bold line and then other pieces are much more detailed and realistic looking. My favourite piece of theirs I saw at the exhibit was defiantly the case with the 3D scene. Technique I like how varied the techniques are, the artist uses a wide range of mediums from painting  to creating physical 3D scenes using a mixture of materials and soft goods. Concept  I can see the concept of the work being the relationship between nature and urban environments. in a lot of the pieces the characters shown in wooded areas seem far happier than those depicted in more built up areas.

Urban Spree - Weekly update

Here are some photos of some of the street art from around Urban Spree in Berlin. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I went here for one of the Pictoplasma exhibitions. I will be posting more photos from the trip of the different places I went.

Research & analysis: Pictoplasma - Urban Spree + weekly update + Targets

Image
This week I'm in Berlin with my college to go around the Pictoplasma character walk. The first place we went as part of the walk was an exhibition showing character work by various artists. The exhibition was hosted at a location called Urban Spree. The above images are some of my favourites from the exhibition. I really appreciated how different a lot of the pieces were. lots of paintings, sculptures and prints. I set myself the target of seeing as many of the exhibitions as I could while also getting to know the city itself. I will hopefully be able to show how well I did towards this target with the posts that come after this one. If there's a lot of posts on artists and photo's then that probably means I did okay.
